Description Distinguished Service Cross awarded to Abraham Baum. Baum received the DSC for leading a raid on POW Camp OFLAG XIII-B near Hammelburg, Germany. Baum received his orders from General Patton and Patton's son-in-law John K. Waters was imprisoned at the camp. The raid was undermanned and Baum's forces were captured shortly after liberating the prisoners and all were sent back to the camp. Patton has been accused of ordering the mission only to save his son-in-law.
"For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operation against an armed enemy in Germany. On 26 March, 1945, Captain Baum led an armored task force in daring action into enemy territory to liberate Allied prisoners held by the Germans near Hammelburg, Germany. Enroute, as the column entered the town of Germuden, Captain Baum was wounded by enemy rocket fire. Depite his wounds, he continued to lead the force throughout the day and the following night until he was wounded during action on the outskirts of Hammelburg. Captain Baum's fearless determination, and his inspiring leadership and loyal, courageous devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest tradition of military service."
